Dear Dan:

Here, I suppose mostly for your records, is a report on the
present status of the Electronic Library Project.

The character of the Project is unchanged from the earlier
documents proposing it. No real work has been done, since the
money has just arrived in Marseilles.

I have discussed Michael Griffith's plans with him in
considerable detail, and they all seem appropriate to me. The
first piece of paper I will see from the Project is a proposed
user's manual. This will tell me how the system is planned to
look to the user. I will react to it in writing and probably
also in a trip to Marseilles. After we reach agreement on how
the system will look to the user, they will begin programming
it. In my opinion, this approach has the largest probability
of avoiding unpleasant surprises.

Griffiths is also looking into getting material by
trading with the Tresor de la Langue Francaise and by acquiring
a reading machine. On the former, he is the big expert, and
he seems to have had more success than I have had in learning
about a good available machine.

Sincerely,
